Energy Gel Types

There are currently over 20 energy gels on the market and the formulations vary significantly from gel to gel. If you are going to use an energy gel it’s important to understand the type of gel that is appropriate for whatever you’re using it for.

Carbohydrate Gels

The vast majority of gels fall into this category including GU.

Carbohydrate + Electrolyte Gels

All gels have SOME electolytes, but very few have enough to adequately replenish the electrolytes you need during training and competition. If your gel doesn’t have electrolytes then you need to get them from another source.

Gels with Fat and Protein

Some gels are marketed as “real food” which typically also means they contain fat and protein. These gels have significantly more digestive requirements than carbohydrate gels. There are some situations where this is appropriate, but do your homework!
